I'm exhausted. Yesterday's training took it out of me. I know that there are a few people at my gym that can train multiple times a day but I'm not that person. I did Crossfit, worked all day, took the dog for a walk and then did 1.5 hours of weightlifting. I find that it is hard to switch off after weightlifting, it's like my brain is wired and I can't turn it off so I find it hard to go to sleep. I should have had a rest day today and my effort in today's WOD reflected that. Why do I keep doing it to myself?
Despite all that, I had a great session at weightlifting last night. I actually got a full snatch last night!!! Happy days! Okay, it was just with the 10 kg bar but I'm not sure if I have ever gotten into a full snatch from the ground (I did when I did the one-on-one session with the weightlifting coaches but that was from the hang). To most people this would seem like a small insignificant thing but, to me, it's a big fricken deal!
We then went onto power clean and jerk and I was really happy with how I went. I got some pretty good feedback and worked on improving my shrug. I also need to work on opening my hips more.
The last thing we worked on was our front squat. I had Shane spot me when I went for my 1RM of 55 kg but unfortunately failed the attempt. I still feel really good about it as it is good for me to try and push myself out of my comfort zone.
I may be tired today but I'm also really happy. Early night for this chook tonight though :)

The Universe is Talking to Me
And I know I should listen! This week I have been inundated with articles shared on FB regarding overtraining and recovery. It has come at a time when I'm tired and am going backward in my training. I know I should rest or deload but there is this little part of me that thinks that I'm just lazy and not trying hard enough. I can see the other girls at the gym improving and I'm stagnate ... I need to do more, to work harder, rest days are for the uncommitted.
I love Crossfit, it's my happy place. A friend from work just started the beginner classes and she commented that I look so tired at work but at the gym I'm animated and alive. I'm happy at the gym and I can't contemplate not going 6 days a week ... what else would I have to look forward to each day?
The downside of Crossfit is the need to be and do more. We celebrate high attendance and cheer when people get PRs. I get sucked into that way of thinking. When I did weightlifting I was doing that as well as the WOD plus I threw in a mobility class and pilates to top it off. I was top attendee for the week, I was also exhausted and ended up sick the following week. Another week I did a double class and pilates. Why? Because a few other people were doing it and that both the WODs looked like fun. I had a severe case of FOMO (fear of missing out) and maybe a dash of wanting to be a 'bad ass' by being able to do several workouts in a day. Superwoman complex much?
I get depressed when we have a 1RM day and I don't get a PB. I spend hours going over it in my mind trying to think of what I have to do to overcome such failure. I overthink everything instead of allowing my body to do what it needs naturally, I force myself with ugly lifts to try and keep up with the pack. Is it because everyone loves a winner?
The universe is telling me to slow down, to look after myself. I forced myself to go to bed early Thursday night and I slept in the following day. I went to the gym in the afternoon and had the best workout I've had all week. There's something in that.
The universe is telling me to stop with the craziness. To look after myself. I have nothing to prove, I'm not an elite athlete who is training for a competition ... I'm training for life.

Juggling
I have had a couple of Crossfit sessions off over the last few days. I had increased my exercise last week to accomodate the weightlifting classes but ended the week with a tired, aching body. The girls had a dancing workshop on the weekend which meant I had to give the ladies class a miss. I wanted to do the 7 am class but my body needed to sleep. Instead I dragged my hubby along to pilates.
I'm so proud of him giving pilates a go. He was very nervous before the class and I could see he was struggling with a few of the movements (we all were!) but he stuck with it and at the end he commented that he felt pretty good and one move in particular really freed up his shoulders.
I woke up this morning ready to go to Crossfit and decided to give it a miss. I feel like the girls are going to go back to school next week and we will be back into the swing of netball, dancing and cello and I'll be worn out from burning the candle at both ends over the last couple of weeks. I know I can't maintain a hectic pace of Crossfit, walking the dog and weightlifting as well as maintaining a household and I don't want to fall in a heap because I have burnt myself out. Crossfit will take the backseat while I focus on these weightlifting classes this week.
On another note, I have 2 weeks before competing in our local crossfit team competition. Some of the movement standards have been released and it caused a little meltdown on my behalf. There will be bar facing burpees in amongst it. I did the 14.5 WOD and got away with jumping over the end of the bar (which is slightly higher than the middle of the bar due to its thickness) but I doubt I will be able to do that for this competition. I was in tears when I saw it because I don't want to let down my teammates. I have been practicing my jumping at home and I know I can jump over the bar. I have just under 2 weeks to get more comfortable with the movement ... I can do it!

Saturday Insanity
I ended up having Friday off Crossfit as well last week as I wanted to spend some time with Mal (something we very rarely get to do). It was nice to have a couple of days off the gym and I woke up on Saturday full of energy.
What does a girl do when she has energy to burn? Well this silly girl decided to do back-to-back Crossfit sessions as both the normal WOD and the Ladies class looked like fantastic workouts AND then finish it off with the Pilates class!!
Both WODs were quite big with the programmed workout called Cindy's Meaner Twin. It was a 30 minute AMRAP of:
Team of 2
5 chest to bar pull ups
10 handstand push ups
15 jump squats
Fortunately I was put into a team of 3 with 2 fabulous ladies, Timmy and Jardan. Unfortunately, as we were in a team of 3, one person had to hold a plank while the others were working. As you may know, Jardan is one of our coaches and Timmy is a fantastic athlete as well so it was both exciting and nerve-wracking to be put with these ladies and I hoped I wouldn't let them down.
It was tricky trying to spread the work evenly between the 3 of us and I think we were tripping over each other a little which was quite funny as we were all being so polite. It was a tough workout but fun as well.
The ladies WOD was another goodie:
Team of 2:
600 m run
3 rounds barbell complex (each) 2 deadlifts, 3 hang power cleans, 4 push press and 5 back squats
50 double unders (between the partners)
400 m run
6 rounds bbc
100 double unders
200 m run
9 round bbc
150 double unders
This time I was paired up with the awesome Annie. She is quite a bit stronger than me but she was happy to stick with 25 kg for the barbell complex. We got up to the final round of this WOD finishing 6 rounds of the barbell complex before we reached the 30 minute cut off. It was a really tough workout but, again, it was fun and we got to have just over 30 seconds to rest while our partner did the barbell work.
I have recovered quite well from all this work (although I think the nanna nap on Saturday afternoon really helped). My legs are a little tender and I really felt them when I rode to work this morning but I'm not totally crippled which is nice. Mind you, I doubt I'll be doing another triple header again any time soon.

Opening My Big Mouth!
This was today's fun:
Three rounds for time of:
-
10 Push Press 55 kg (35 kg)
20 Hang Power Clean 55 kg (35 kg)
30 Deadlift 55 kg (35 kg)
-
(Courtesy of CrossFit Resolve)
-
Finisher
In partners
400m Sprint (Relay Style)
400 Double Unders (combined total one person working at a time)
400m Sprint (Relay Style)
I chose a weight of 20 kg for this one. I was worried about getting through the 20 hang cleans and while some of the girls around me did 25 kg I was glad I stuck with the weight I had originally chosen. The workout caned my forearms and I was finding that it was more my grip strength that was suffering rather than any other muscle. I got the first part of the workout done in just over 9 minutes.
We then set up for the finisher and as we were at the door waiting for the start, our coach said that one of the blokes was going to blitz us in the run and we had to try and keep pace with him. I flippantly said that we would catch him and his partner in the double unders. Why do I say these things? Sean, our coach, then said that if my partner and I didn't catch up with them in the double unders there would be a penalty for BOTH of us. I spent the next minute or so apologising to my partner.
My partner, H, was the ran first in our relay and she came back well after the other people ... things weren't looking good! I tried running as fast as I could (which still isn't that fast) and when I got back we chipped away at the double unders. Because we didn't want to be there all day we chose to do 200 double unders and decided to try and get 20 reps out each until we reached 200. Luckily H is quite good at double unders ... thank goodness! H went off for her second run just seconds before the guy we were trying to catch. We caught them in the double unders!! Granted, we did 200 and they did 400 but we didn't get a penalty by the skin of our teeth. PHEW!

Did It!
I survived last night's horror workout. Okay, I did the scaling options of:
1km 500 m Run
900m 500 m Run
800m 400 m Run
700m 400 m Run
600m 300 m Run
500m 300 m Run
400m 200 m Run
300m 200 m Run
200m 100 m Run
And then I get to rest!
For Time:
10 Pull Ups
10 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
9 Pull Ups
9 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
8 Pull Ups
8 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
7 Pull Ups
7 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
6 Pull Ups
6 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
5 Pull Ups
5 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
4 Pull Ups
4 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
3 Pull Ups
3 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
2 Pull Ups
2 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
100m Run
1 Pull Up
1 KB Swing 32kg/24kg
My total time was 33:05. The cut off for this workout was 45 minutes which was why I chose to do the scaling option. I didn't believe that I could finish the workout before the cut off. After doing some calculations, I think I would have finished at around the 60 minute mark so I'm glad I scaled. I also scaled the kettlebell weight to 12 kg and used the green band for my pull ups (the scaling for pullups is jumping then blue band and then green).
I found the runs tough ... moreso mentally than physically and more than once I wanted to quit but was pleased that I kept going by telling myself constantly that I could do it and that each time would get easier. I was also really happy with how strong my pull ups and swings felt.
The thing that I am noticing is how much everyone has improved. Our strength and endurance has improved out of sight. The girl that was my partner last week had always done jumping pull ups until our partner WOD where she used the blue band and has not gone back to jumping since then. How awesome is that?!
Today's WOD is Fran. Last time I did Fran I scaled the reps but this time I will do full reps. I'm not sure what weight I will be using but am currently thinking 17.5 kg (last time was 15 kg) and green band.
And tomorrow's workout is another Hero WOD ... a new one:

Nasty Girls
I stupidly decided to go back to crossfit yesterday for the WOD. I mean, how could I pass up the opportunity to do a workout called 'Nasty Girls.' It looks like this:
“Nasty Girls”
For Time
3 Rounds of:
50 Air Squats
7 Muscle Ups
10 Hang Power Cleans 60kg/40kg
Of course I had to modify the muscle ups with the scaling option being 14 pull ups (with a band) and 14 knee push ups. My cleans were at 15 kg.
I was pretty sore from the previous day's workout as well as my morning PT session so chose a weight and options I thought I could handle. In hindsight I could have done bench push ups and maybe 17.5 kg for cleans but the pull ups absolutely killed me.
Due to having the PT session in the morning, Mossy missed his daily walk but I made it up to him once I got home from the gym. I was walking a bit 'special' after all those air squats but I think it helped my legs recover as they aren't feeling too bad. Upper body is a different kettle of fish.
I checked the WOD for today and am starting to think the coach really hates us.
For Time:
1km Run
10 Pull Ups
10 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
900m Run
9 Pull Ups
9 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
800m Run
8 Pull Ups
8 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
700m Run
7 Pull Ups
7 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
600m Run
6 Pull Ups
6 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
500m Run
5 Pull Ups
5 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
400m Run
4 Pull Ups
4 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
300m Run
3 Pull Ups
3 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
200m Run
2 Pull Ups
2 KB Swings 32kg/24kg
100m Run
1 Pull Up
1 KB Swing 32kg/24kg
More pull ups!!! At least it's a descending ladder so there are less reps each round but that's not what is worrying me ... it's the running! I think I'm going to die!

Yet Another Crazy Weekend
It was yet another busy weekend in our household and there is a part of me that is looking forward to the kids school holidays coming up. I won't be able to take time off but at least it doesn't seem quite as hectic as normal.
Saturday was hectic but I love it that way. It kicks off with 7 am Crossfit and I was introduced to wall balls in this WOD. I can safely say that they are up there with some of my most disliked exercises. Halfway through the WOD I felt like I was going to cry - particularly when quite a few wall balls were discounted as I didn't reach the mark - but I was pleased that I got through the whole session. I have discovered that often my coping mechanism when I feel like I've had enough is to laugh and make jokes which I guess doesn't help with the whole 'need to breathe' thing but I think whatever gets me through the workout.
After my training, I got home and had a feed of oats and then it was out again to take Missy T to the library. That kid churns through books so quickly, I swear the librarians will know us by name soon. It is great to hear her giggling in the back of the car as she reads one of the Andy Griffiths books.
After a bit of shopping we headed home for lunch and I managed to get a nanna nap in before we had to go out again for Mal's touch footy finals. Unfortunately they weren't winners this year but it was a pretty tight game against much younger opponents. I decided it was best to let him enjoy a few drinks with his mates and came home and snuggled up in bed with my book.
The girls have been having extra dance lessons to prepare them for their upcoming exams so Sundays have become dancing days. I have a little look through the 2-way mirror to their class and I have to say that I'm often impressed with how well all the girls in the class dance. The girls in the class have been dancing together for several years and they really have gone from being babies to looking like dancers.
Overall, a busy but rather enjoyable weekend.

In Need of a Paper Bag
The last couple of days I've missed some workouts for various reasons. Just because I have so much time on my hands (???) I thought it would be a great idea to have a party this weekend for Missy T's birthday. Any sane working parent would have the said party at Maccas or HJ's or even the local indoor kids playground but not me, nooooooo, I have to have a Halloween themed birthday party at our house. Panic has ensued and I took last night off boxing to get the outdoor area tidied up because I can't leave that until Saturday as I have a hair appointment that afternoon plus I daresay I will be busy baking etc then as well. I figure if I do little bits every night it won't make Saturday quite so bad. I wonder why I do this to myself! No matter ... I'm sure it will be fun.
This morning's workout has been missed as Moo now has orchestra at 7:30 so hopefully I can get it done this evening after picking the girls up from dancing. Man, when did life get so hectic?! I've spent the rest of the morning trying not to hyperventilate due to the fact that I've missed some training. I have to remind myself that sometimes life just gets in the way and that it is okay to skip some sessions when I need too.

Busy Bee
Life has been crazy busy lately and I'm loving every minute of it. Anyway, I don't have an awful lot to blog about so I think I'll just put some photos up of my gorgeous girls. Moo has just discovered my hair straightener and we had to straighten both girls' hair before going out on Saturday and Sunday. They are growing up waaaaaay too fast.

The Only Way Is Up
My week just keeps on getter better and better. Monday's effort included a sleepless night with a sick child and a husband who twisted his knee at his cricket finals, an awful day at work where an entire day's work had to be repeated due to equipment breakdown, Missy T jamming her fingers in the door at gymnastics and unfortunately I was watching Moo and didn't hear her screaming for me so she was stuck there for a good 5 minutes (I'm not going to win 'Mother of the Year') and then reversing into someone's car at gymnastics. In my defense, the car was parked illegally so it wasn't entirely my fault. I got home in one piece and I would have given anything for a few Rum and Cokes plus a block of chocolate. I rang my sister instead.
Today, I'm home from work as Missy T started vomitting last night so its been yet another night with little sleep. I've had to go to work to start up an ICP run and will have to go back in this afternoon to process it as the other lady who is trained in running the ICP is on holidays. I figure my week can only get better!
On the plus side, eats have been good and the ankle is on the mend. I am missing my cardio workouts tremendously but I had a great upper body workout last night.
